WHY are people so easily convinced that someone is truthful because they say they are?

Do these same people believe OJ Simpson when he says I did NOT kill Nicole and Ron Goldman? Do they believe CHARLES MANSON when he says I hurt no one, I have been framed? Both Oj and Charles Manson are very Charasmatic and good speakers! IS that all the American public needs is someone to smile and lie at the same time?
