What happened to aerith and zack in ff7?

I just watched final fantasy vii advent children and there was these 2 people at the end of the movie. I just found out that their names were zack and aerith- characters of the game. Unfortunately i didn't ply ff7. So what were their relationships with cloud and tifa and what happened to them??
