Why do people honk at you when cycling (bike routes)?

I don't mean teenagers or anything. Adults honk. Presumably it's because they have or do bike country rds, etc ... but wouldn't any biker know a car horn is startling and distracting? Is it just me? It always catches me off guard when I'm focused on what's in front of me ... and worries me a bit, frankly.
